“Students do not have adequate resources in high school, and the ones they are presented with do not accurately portray what mental illness is truly like. Peers are generally supportive, but there’s still a stigma around mental illness among the millennial generation."

HOW TO SOLVE THIS RAMPANT PROBLEM

And Decrease Stigma Behind Mental Illnesses at CHS

The Link Crew at Century High School, a group that helps with freshman orientation and events of that nature, will work with the counselors and teachers to educate them on how to detect when someone is struggling from a mental illness and what to do about it. The Link Crew will then give presentations to each English class about the same thing so the teachers and students are equally educated. They will also have “Link Hours” during lunch hours available to students who need to destress and just talk about something other than school.

"I've had points docked like no one's business because I missed so much school last year (as I was suffering from severe anxiety & was in an extremely abusive relationship) - it fascinates me that if this issue were to be PHYSICAL, this never would have happened."

MY STORY

Overcoming Stigma To Help Others

My whole life I could tell something was a little off in my brain. I didn't know what to do about it until it got so bad that I no longer had functional days. May of my senior year at Century High School I was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder and Depression with symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Instead of folding into myself I decided to get help and am on medication and undergoing counseling to get my life back on track. I want to decrease the stigma at Century so others are not afraid to get the help I did.
